Mint Dental – Open House

Dr. Eric M. Bradshaw DDS and Dr. Aliya Kassam, DDS invite the community to tour their new office and learn about the importance of dental health from 12pm – 2pm on Saturday, May 3, 2014.  There will be giveaways, a raffle, as well as the opportunity to meet the Mint Dental staff and schedule appointments. The office is located at 329 Rhode Island Avenue NE, Suite A, in Washington, DC. “We are very excited to share our dental suite with the neighborhood,” Dr. Bradshaw said. “A smile is your calling card and a picture perfect smile is your key to good health and success. We are looking forward to helping lots of people smile more.” Mint Dental provides comprehensive preventative, cosmetic, and restorative dental services for the whole family.  The office employs the latest state-of-the-are equipment in a mercury-free environment to ensure patients have access to the most comfortable dental care available. Services available include implant dentistry, Invisalign®, and Zoom® Whitening Technologies. After earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree, Dr. Bradshaw earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and completed post-graduate training in Advanced General Dentistry at Howard University College of Dentistry. He has provided dental care in several nursing homes and has participated in large, organized events, such as the Southern Maryland Mission of Mercy. Dr. Bradshaw is a member of the American Dental Association. Dr. Kassam received her Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from Howard University College of Dentistry. She continued her post-doctoral training in Oklahoma City at OU Medical Center and The Children’s Hospital, where she received extensive training in a multitude of fields including pediatric dentistry, oral surgery, and dental anesthesiology. Dr. Kassam also completed an extended rotation at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Kassam is a member of the American Dental Association. New FoodRite Grocery for Edgewood/Eckington!

The RIA Main Street communities of Edgewood and Eckington have a new grocery store! FoodRite Discount Supermarket opened earlier this week at 2205 4th St. NE, the site of the former New Star Supermarket. We stopped in to visit earlier this week, and were thrilled to see a clean store with fresh meats and produce. One of the new owners, Amru Ousman, said they are dedicated to providing an ever-improving shopping experience. They are planning on expanding to include organic produce and a full bakery. The store’s Grand Opening will be this weekend – be sure to stop in and support this great new store!...

Pepco to start burying power lines on RIA

Today’s issue of the Washington Post brings Good Ward 5 News! On Monday, Mayor Gray signed legislation authorizing $1B to bury feeder lines over the course of five to seven years. Work could begin later this year, with the RIA corridor slated for the 2nd year of the project. The DC Public Service Commission must provide final approval on a surcharge that will be billed to Pepco customers. This is in response to the “Derecho” of 2012 that left many neighborhoods without power for days. The areas targeted in this large undergrounding initiative were hit the hardest by the Derecho. While grid reliability is the primary reason for burying the power lines, this project has also been supported by many in the RIA community for aesthetic reasons, so this is great news for us.  The large trees that line RIA between the RIA metro station and Eastern Avenue have been aggressively trimmed by Pepco over the years in order to reduce damage to power lines during storm events. The beautiful green canopy of trees is left looking mangled and warped. A tour of highly successful revitalization zones in DC shows that underground power lines is a key component to a successful streetscape design. In fact, when FoRIA participated in the DC Vibrant Retail Streets program last year, one of the top recommendations that we received was to push for undergrounding of the power...

RIA Main Street Is Here – What’s Next?

The holidays have been a flurry of activity here! Since Councilmember McDuffie and Mayor Gray’s December 18 announcement of the selection of FoRIA to manage the new Rhode Island Avenue Main Street, we’ve been scrambling to get our transition in place. We know you probably have tons of questions – and we want to make sure we get all the answers for you. Back in September, we posted some FAQs about the RIA Main Street. We’ll be spending the next few weeks attending required trainings for Main Street policies, procedures, and expectations.
