The time and location for the meeting has now been set: 6:30 – 8:30 pm at Woodridge Library. We’ve been talking about it for a while, and after delays on new contract awards during the Federal Government shut-down, DDOT has finally announced the first date for public meetings to get community input about streetscape improvements to Rhode Island Avenue. On December 11th, DDOT will host the first of several public meetings to solicit your input on what types of streetscape improvements are needed on Rhode Island Avenue NE. The phrase “streetscape” refers to improvements in the physical appearance and condition of RIA – including options for improved lighting for pedestrian safety, better crosswalks, more trees, decorative sidewalks, benches, planters, etc. The RIA corridor is YOUR neighborhood commercial corridor, and YOUR input will provide the direction that DDOT takes for improving the safety and appearance of the Avenue. WMATA has scheduled the first round of public meetings for the Metrobus Rhode Island Avenue-Baltimore Avenue Corridor Study to solicit input from riders to identify and evaluate transit service problems in order to develop improvements for the bus routes (G8, 81, 82, 83, 84, 86, and T18) operating in the corridor. The meetings are the next step in the project, which started soliciting public input earlier this summer with a ridership survey. The public meetings are open to all members of the public, and no advance registration is required. These meetings will be “open house” style. Participants may arrive any time between 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm, as no presentation will be given. Instead, participants will be able to review display boards and speak individually with the project team about rider survey results and service issues and concerns. This feedback will lead to the development of service improvement options for the corridor, so please don’t miss this opportunity to share your thoughts and your transportation needs with WMATA! Here’s the latest information on the Great Streets Small Business Capital Improvement Funding program: As mentioned in a previous post, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development (DMPED) has released the first round of grant applications for the Small Business Capital Improvement grants, with funding up to $85,000 to use for starting or improving small businesses. The funds can be used for such projects as facade improvement, renovations, and some equipment purchases. There will be a series of information sessions for small businesses, including one for Rhode Island Avenue at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 22nd, at the Woodridge Library (1801 Hamlin). If you are a small business on Rhode Island Avenue NE, and are interested in pursuing this fantastic grant opportunity, please plan on attending the the information session on Monday.
